This project has been in the works for a long time and has finally come to fruition.
It all began when previous library director Charlotte Cabaniss Robertson procured grant funding to have the Baldwin Times Newspaper, housed on microfilm at the Alabama Department of Archives and History, burned to CD.
This project has been on the back burner for several years and after much research I found a great company to transfer the files on CD to a searchable database.
Advantage Preservation has created a beautiful site from which to view these wonderful old newspapers with just the click of your mouse.

The Bay Minette Public Library has been awarded a $3,000 grant from the North Baldwin Community Foundation, an affiliate of the Community Foundation of South Alabama. This grant award will help cover the cost of 120 children to participate in the Dolly Parton Imagination Library through the Bay Minette Public Library. As part of this project, participants are able to receive one book per month from birth to five years of age.
"We are thrilled to receive this grant award, which will help us put books in the hands of young readers," said Joanna Bailey, Library Director. "We want to provide the children in our community with a firm reading foundation to ensure reading success in their school years to come. Parents and caregivers reading aloud to their children will increase literacy and verbal skills and give them a strong foundation.”
The Dollywood Foundation has a Blue-Ribbon Selection Committee that selects curated titles. The program model gives access to quality books at a fraction of the cost. The organization also covers the overhead costs associated with the program, having the local champion’s (Bay Minette Public Library) only financial responsibility be the at-cost book and mailing expenses. The funds stay local and 100 percent of the funding goes to serve the children in our community.
The are not any spots available at this time to register for our program. However, as current readers graduate from the program, openings will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis. Please contact Joanna Bailey at (251) 580-1648 to be added to our waitlist.
The Dolly Parton Imagination Library is now available to children from birth up to five-years old in Bay Minette, Stockton and Perdido thanks to the Bay Minette Public Library!
Sponsored by a grants from The North Community Foundation and International Paper and a generous contribution from Senator Greg Albritton, the Bay Minette Public Library is now signing up children to participate in the global reading initiative.
The program sends a book free of charge through the mail each month to the child. Parents and caregivers are encouraged to read to their children from the curated titles.
Launched in Sevier County, Tennessee is 1995, the Dolly Parton Imagination Library has grown into a global program that has expanded into Canada, Australia, the United Kingdom and Republic of Ireland.
The organization has a Blue Ribbon Book Selection Committee that chooses the titles which are purchased at the wholesale price. Thanks to the North Baldwin Literacy Council, which is housed in the library, the library was able to qualify for non-profit postal rates. Set up by zip code, the program is available for children in the North Baldwin County zip codes 36507, 36579 and 36562.
According to the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching, “there is almost a 90 percent probability that a child will remain a poor reader at the end of the fourth grade if the child is a poor reader at the end of the first grade.”
“We want to provide the children in our community with a firm reading foundation to ensure reading success in their school years to come,” said BMPL director Joanna Bailey. “Thanks to the Dolly Parton Imagination Library we will be able to provide quality books that are their very own.”
The Dollywood Foundation covers the overhead costs associated with the program. The library’s only financial responsibility is the at-cost books and mailing expenses. The funds stay local and 100 percent of the funding goes to serve the children in our community.

Quick Guide to Using Camellia Net
Visit camellia.lib.overdrive.com
The type of device you are using determines your next step. The most common e-readers we are seeing are Kindles, Nooks, iPads and iPods/phones, Android phones, and various tablets. E-books can also be read on your desktop or laptop. When you pull up a book on CamelliaNet, you will see a box like this:
Format:
Kindle Book
Adobe EPUB eBook
Kindles can only use Kindle books.
Nooks use Adobe EPUB.
On an Apple product (iPad, iPod/phone), Android, computer, or other tablet, you will need to install apps. The app to read Kindle books is the Kindle app. The Overdrive Console app will allow you to read Adobe EPUB. Both apps are free.
Kindle books are managed through your Kindle account on Amazon. After check out, your book will be available for download through Amazon.
Nook users have an extra step. You will need to download Adobe Digital Editions (also free) to your personal computer and create an Adobe ID. You will then need to authorize your device with your Adobe ID. Dock your Nook to your computer. Your library book will download to your computer. Open Adobe Digital Editions and go to the library view. Drag the title to the “NOOK” icon. Undock the NOOK from your computer. In the Library, open My Documents. The title should be available to be read for the period of time specified by the library.
Other users can download EPUB books directly from the Overdrive Console, without going through a computer.
You will be asked to choose your library, then enter your card #. This is the long number on the back of your library card. Your pin is the last four digits of that #.
Throughout history the public library has been held in high esteem as a seat of knowledge, recognized as a public trust, and noted for its integral role in the community’s well being and sense of worth. The mission of the Bay Minette Public Library is to continue this honored and honorable tradition by enriching our community with an abundance of resources, including modern and traditional access points to information, as well as by providing a variety of services with the betterment of the patron the first and foremost priority.
Our History
Books were hard to come by at the turn of the century. Expensive when they could be found at all, books from religious writings to Shakespeare to popular western novels were a treat for the wealthy. But in Bay Minette, all of that was about to change. In 1922, the Bay Minette Public Library was founded by the Women’s Civic Improvement Association – an organization that itself was founded in 1913.
